Vermont’s only operating wind farm is an 11-turbine project on a mountaintop in Searsburg that has been run by Green Mountain Power since 1997. In November 2004, Deerfield Wind asked the U.S. Forest Service for authorization to use federal lands for a new wind project. Now they are asking the Vermont Public Service Board for permission to install 15 to 24 wind turbines on mountaintops in Searsburg and Readsboro. The new wind farm would be adjacent to the existing one and would have a capacity as high as 45 megawatts. In March 2006, Readsboro voters overwhelmingly supported the project.
